M.E.A.T. Confessional Booth

Idea

Inspired by people’s interactions with Numina, a confessional booth is setup as a stand alone installation where anyone can go in and record their confessions.

Headphones will be provided with ambient music or a music selection menu is available for people to choose some songs to isolate the noise from the outside. Video of user will be recorded and the output will be visually modified by a TouchDesigner patch (Based on the music?).

The insides of the booth can be themed by us (Industrial / Gothic / Stained Glass / etc…). Optionally foam padding on the inside or whatever the sound isolation foam is called to stop noise leaks.

Execution

As much as I wanted to lean into a church themed box experience. We were offered this creepy looking liminal space that used to be an underground Radio Shack that was later converted into an underground no-name dollar store (It literally just says DOLLAR on the sign in a Times New Roman font). So we had to change the theme up a bit and make it more spooky. Enter, the HR confessional. Confess your work sins to the HR overlords. Given the space’s eerie vibes, we decided to lean more into it, kind of like a haunted / abandoned work space that kept evolving even though time has forgotten about it. It was also Halloween week 😈.

Overall pretty happy with how this turned out during our RESIDENCE project. Will definitely revisit this idea and do it the way I imagined it to be.
